so what is fergus kilpatrick?
“Who is Fergus Kilpatrick” is the result of a year of investigation and loads of head wrecking thinking sessions around the concept of reality.
The base for our project was initially the works of contemporary philosophers Jacques Derrida and Jean Baudrillard. From them, we took the desire and accuracy with which they question that which seems unquestionable. Their views on the interaction between real and illusory in contemporary societies created in us a new interest in theatre: we thought that the relationship between these two concepts relates to the very nature of theatre. We see theatre as the right medium to articulate the arguments between real and illusory since, without doubt, this is the base of any theatrical event.
Our usual incapacity to even see said argumentation is what Baudrillard calls Simulation: not a lie, not representation, not a “faking” but a reproduction of the real to the point it becomes a reality in itself.
“Who is Fergus Kilpatrick” is our attempt on simulation. To do this, we embarked on the task of making a non-theatre piece. It has been created repeatedly trying to avoid theatre. Is that possible? Have we succeeded?
In it, technology and historic, new and old, improvisation and humming are mashed into a performance piece with its own signature.
All of our efforts to avoid theatre produced a surprising result... or, perhaps, not surprising at all. But one that until now remained as a secret to us.
“Who is Fergus Kilpatrick?” is our way to tell you our secret.
